About Sweden

Sweden is Scandinavia's largest country, stretching from the temperate farmlands of Skåne in the south to the Arctic wilderness of Swedish Lapland. Its long coastline, thousands of islands, and vast boreal forests create a landscape of quiet, expansive beauty.

Stockholm, the capital, spreads across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. Its blend of medieval Gamla Stan, waterfront modernity, and innovative design has made it one of Europe's most attractive cities. Gothenburg, Malmö, and university towns like Uppsala and Lund add further cultural depth.

Sweden is renowned for its welfare state, gender equality, environmental consciousness, and cultural exports — from IKEA and Spotify to ABBA and Ingmar Bergman. A strong tradition of neutrality (recently ended with NATO membership in 2024) and internationalism has given Sweden an outsized voice in global affairs.

History

Sweden's Viking Age (roughly 800–1050) saw Swedish traders and warriors venture eastward along river routes to Constantinople and Baghdad. The medieval Kalmar Union with Denmark and Norway gave way to Swedish independence under Gustav Vasa in 1523, and the seventeenth-century Swedish Empire briefly dominated the Baltic under Gustavus Adolphus and Charles XII.

The loss of Finland to Russia in 1809 marked the end of Swedish imperial ambitions, and the country turned inward, building a prosperous, neutral society. Sweden stayed out of both World Wars and constructed the 'Swedish Model' — a comprehensive welfare state funded by high taxes and anchored by strong labor unions. EU membership came in 1995, and the country joined NATO in 2024.

A military power during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war for two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars. Since then, Sweden has pursued a successful economic formula consisting of a capitalist system intermixed with substantial welfare elements. Sweden joined the EU in 1995, but the public rejected the introduction of the euro in a 2003 referendum. The share of Sweden’s population born abroad increased from 11.3% in 2000 to 19.1% in 2018.

Culture & Society

Swedish culture balances modernity and tradition. Midsummer — celebrated with maypole dancing, herring, and schnapps — is the most beloved holiday. The design tradition (Scandinavian functionalism) permeates everything from furniture to urban planning. Swedish cuisine has evolved from rustic staples (meatballs, crispbread, pickled herring) to a sophisticated New Nordic scene. The country's contributions to popular music — ABBA, Roxette, Swedish House Mafia, and an endless stream of pop songwriters — are disproportionate to its population.
