The 20 administrative districts that make up what residents of the capital call ‘Paris intramuros’, or Paris within the walls, may already seem as though they’d take a lifetime to explore. But visitors who stay in the capital alone risk missing some of the treasures that lurk a short train or bus ride away, including the world-famous art collection within the walls of the Château de Chantilly, the glorious Ancien Régime passageways and promenades of Versailles or the breathtaking châteaux at Malmaison and Vaux-le-Vicomte. These buildings, which once represented a breath of country calm for their aristocratic inhabitants, now mark a blessed relief from the teeming streets of Paris for their thousands of yearly visitors.
